Kitten WellnessWe recommend kittens be vaccinated against Feline Leukemia, Rhinotracheitis, Calici and, Panleukopenia.

All new kittens before being vaccinated should be tested for Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency virus.  This is a simple blood test that takes about 10 minutes to get a result.  This simple test allows the veterinary staff to determine if the cat already has a potentially life threatening illness that can be transmitted to other cats.

All kittens should be de-wormed. Cats and dogs can contract intestinal worms from other animals and pests in the environment.  These worms can potentially infect humans and cause mild to serious infections, sometimes even blindness.  It is recommended that your cat be dewormed at least yearly to lessen or prevent these infections.

Kittens are first vaccinated typically at 8 weeks of age. They are vaccinated again, at 12 and 16 weeks.  They are vaccinated again at 1 year and then every 1-3 years after that depending on the lifestyle of your cat. We can advise you which vaccinations are appropriate for you feline friend.  Your pet will also be de wormed at the 8-week and 12 week appointments.

Rabies vaccination is not required in the state of Hawaii as it is a rabies free area.  If you plan on traveling or moving to the mainland or internationally we can provide this vaccination as required.

Heartworm disease is a potentially fatal disease. It is endemic here in Hawaii, transmitted by mosquitos. Having your pet on the proper preventive medication can easily prevent heartworm disease. Please ask us for our recommendation.
Keauhou Veterinary Hospital recommends having your kittens spayed or neutered between 5-6 months. Spaying females before the first heat is ideal. Neutering males at this time helps to prevent some of the behavioral problems such as marking and aggression. Please see surgery information in the services section for additional information about the surgeries we provide for our patients.
